Outdoor limestone tiles & flagstones

These are the limestones we mark as suitable for external use, for terraces and gardens as well as the rooms inside. Each is also sold for interiors, so you can carry one stone from the kitchen straight out onto the terrace.

Choosing stone for outside

Three of our grey limestone tiles are here: Ashford, a deep mid to dark grey that is consistent in colour; Heritage Grey, an antiqued mid-dark grey with a textured brushed surface; and Hampton Grey, with hand-cut tumbled edges and a worn look. Hampton Olive and Jaipur Heritage bring olive tones mixed with bronze, brown, beige and copper, and Cambridge is a warm beige and light brown with a hard-wearing surface. All but Ashford are on our aged and antiqued limestone page; Ashford is with our tumbled limestone tiles.

Sizes suitable for outdoor use:

  • Ashford Tumbled: 900 × 600 mm and 600 mm free length, 22 mm thick
  • Cambridge Aged: 900 × 600 mm and 600 mm free length, 20 mm thick
  • Hampton Grey: 900 × 600 mm and 600 mm free length, 20 mm thick
  • Hampton Olive: 900 × 600 mm and 600 mm free length, 20 mm thick
  • Heritage Grey: 900 × 600 mm and 600 mm free length, 22 mm thick (its 600 × 400 × 15 mm tile is for indoor use only)
  • Jaipur Heritage: 900 × 600 mm and 600 mm free length, 22 mm thick

Free length is explained on our free-length limestone page.

Outside, natural stone gradually takes on character from sun, rain and the seasons, and any external surface can grow algae or moss in damp, shaded spots, so plan for occasional cleaning. Read our External Surface Prep Guide and External Natural Stone Laying Guide before work starts, order limestone samples to compare them at home, and ask us if you are unsure which stone suits your project.
